Kingdom Community Wind
The Kingdom Community Wind (KCW) project was developed on a 3-mile portion of the Lowell Mountain range in the southwest corner of Orleans County in the Northeast Kingdom community of Lowell. Green Mountain Power partnered with Vermont Electric Cooperative and worked with area residences and land owners in developing this 21-turbine, 63 MW project.
Northeast Wind was a founding team member for Kingdom Community Wind, serving as project manager and assisting in the feasibility assessment, wind resource analysis, turbine siting, and permitting. We assisted Green Mountain Power with coordinating environmental assessment and permitting with a goal of efficiently exceeding the standards and requirements of the Vermont Public Service Board for a Certificate of Public Good. We also supplied support in areas of project planning/management, technical computer-based mapping, visual simulations, FAA filings, and community outreach.
Lowell's voters came to the polls to show their support for Kingdom Community Wind on Vermont's 2010 Town Meeting Day, with 75% of voters casting their support for the Project. After construction, a 2014 vote at Lowell's Town Meeting Day found that 80% of voters supported the Project. KWC has the potential to meet the average energy needs of approximately 24,000 households.
